Stress Management


There are many common stressors, yet their affect on everyone is not the same. In order to manage your stress level one should try to recognize their individual stressors.

Ways to manage stress are as numerous and varied as the causes and manifestations of stress. Stress may be the single most contributing factor to poor overall health and is at least one of the causes of many diseases and chronic illnesses. In order to utilize stress management techniques effectively it is imperative to have some understanding of stress. Most notably one must realize that stress is for the most part self-generated and in order to manage or control it, one must be willing to change. Discover what it is that you are doing to contribute to the problem and change it. In fact the realization that you have choices when it comes to stress and stress management gives a sense of authority and is useful in fulfilling the changes necessary to get stress under control. The changes that need to be made fall into four separate categories, behavior, thinking, lifestyle choice, and situation.

Social interaction in the form of rudeness, bossiness or aggression from others, daily hassles such as commuting to work or school, traffic accidents, misplaced keys or documents, major life events such as moving or a promotion, marriage, birth or death.

People are often surprised to find out that things that they do to cope with stress are actually contributors to stress. Simple changes to lifestyle habits can work wonders for stress management. These include limiting or elimination of caffeine intake, alcohol consumption, and junk food. Having a well balanced diet and not eating too much or too little, Getting adequate sleep, taking some leisure time, Regular exercise, including both physical and relaxation exercises such as meditation or yoga.

Change the way you think. Try to look at things more positively, keep a sense of humor, try to refute negative thoughts, turn problems into opportunity and just overall look at things in a more positive manner. Unwillingness to change is something that needs to be overcome in order to manage stress effectively. In some instances the most beneficial form of stress management is in changes to ones situation. This may include changing jobs, possibly leaving a relationship, developing problem solving skills and effective time and money management.

Some times all one needs is a diversion or distraction from their life or external stressors. Taking a much needed time out such as a short walk or even a vacation can help you to focus on what it is that is bothering you and what, if any changes need to be made. There may not be a quick fix or even one simple solution but stress management is both effective and attainable. Learning to effectively manage stress and relieving current problems and symptoms associated with stress can help to prevent the recurrence of these problems.

Acute stress is the most common form of stress. Acute stress happens to almost everyone some of the time. This type of stress is brought upon by recent demands or anticipated pressure. It is often easily managed and highly treatable. Acute stress is often short lived; it often goes away as quickly as it comes on. This type of stress is usually recognized as it is happening such as when rushing to meet a deadline, involvement in a fender bender, or when looking for a lost item. Some symptoms of acute stress may be seen in emotional responses such as anger or irritability, physical symptoms may include tension headache, muscle tightness, rapid heartbeat or stomach upset. Fortunately since the both the causes and effects are short lived acute stress does not cause long term or extensive problems.

There are those that are always taking on too much, often aggressive, usually running late and always in a hurry. They appear to always be in a state of acute stress. This type of stress is called episodic acute stress. The major difference between the two is that those suffering from episodic acute stress are not aware of the problem. These are the ones that would most benefit from stress management; yet seem to always be taking on more and more responsibilities and don’t recognize it as stress rather just accept it as who they are as if this type of behavior was ingrained in their person.

The term type A personality is often used to describe these individuals who constantly appear to be in a state of acute stress. They are often chronic worriers as well. While those who suffer this type of stress may often appear hostile or angry, they are most often anxious and depressed. Symptoms of this type of stress may be persistent headaches, including migraines, chest pain, hypertension and possibly even heart disease. Chronic stress is the most serious, and harmful type of stress. This type of stress is the kind that seems unending and wears away at a person day after day.

Chronic stress is often the result of ones lifestyle such as a difficult or dysfunctional family, poverty, unhappiness in a relationship, dissatisfaction with a career, or long term unemployment. Some chronic stress is a result of trauma or early childhood experiences that one was never able to get over so they became internalized. Chronic stress affects personality, mental, emotional and physical state, and overall health. Those affected by chronic stress would be most benefited by employing natural methods of stress management everyday yet unfortunately one of the worst aspects of chronic stress is that people get used to living that way while it takes its toll on the mind and body. Chronic stress can lead to death by suicide, heart failure, violence, stroke and even cancer. Some signs and symptoms of stress include anger, anxiety, depression, confusion, poor judgment, headaches, muscle ache, fatigue, and digestive problems; eating too much or too little, sleep problems, poor decision-making, and nervous habits.

Stress is a term that is used often to describe many feelings or emotions. Anxiety, depression, distress, fear, and exhaustion are just some of these and are all

feelings that can be described as stress. Stress is something that occurs all the time and affects everyone one way or another at least some of the time. Stress can be a good thing. It can be a source of motivation to help get something done or help one to react quickly to a potentially dangerous situation. The body reacts to stress by releasing more of the hormones cortisol and epinephrine. This stimulates the sympathetic nervous response or the commonly referred to flight or fight response. In some instances this is useful, however if prolonged for too long or occurring too often, it can have negative effects on the body.

Stress that enhances physical or mental function, such as a challenging assignment that you need to complete, winning a race, or upcoming family events such as holidays or a major life event that is positive is referred to as eustress. This is helpful and often rewarding stress. Stress caused by adverse events or negative feelings of suffering or feeling like in harms way or under threat of being harmed is called distress. Both positive and negative stressors can lead to stress. These stressors can be physical or psychological. They themselves may not be the exact cause of stress as stress is more of a personal interpretation as far as adaptation resulting from personal experiences and the difference between what one might accept and what is expected. One may have preconceived notions on how things are supposed to be and a variance can cause one stress. Many people often internalize events that occur even if they are not personally affected.

There are many factors that contribute to stress. Contributors to stress or stressors range from environmental factors like noise and light to world events such as war and natural disasters. Relationship troubles, work and school and lifestyle choices can all lead to stress. Major life events or changes to ones life are the leading causes of stress as they are the most demanding on personal resources. Such changes include marriage or divorce, pregnancy or the death of a loved one, moving to a new location, changing jobs, etc. Stress can result from feelings or thoughts that one has. What one considers stressful, another may not, and this is why stress is highly individual and personal in nature. Everyone has differing opinions, different ideas about the way things are or are supposed to be and various methods of coping.

Stress affects behavior, the mind and body in many different ways. There are symptoms of stress which like stress itself may vary from person to person in how they are observed or recognized. No matter whom you are too much stress can cause harm both emotionally and physically.

Alternative Remedy Medicine


Our world is basically corrupted with sickness and disease. Yeah, you heard me right. Just take a look around. Pop on the local news and you will surely see something regarding a virus or disease. There’s just no escaping this issue. If you’re human, it’s all around you. Of course every single one of us want to prevent ourselves from getting anything. This is why professionals encourage certain lifestyles and practices. It’s prudent to stay on top of these issues at all times. Now, what about the afflictions you do acquire? I immediately loved the fact that it’s all natural. Furthermore, it has been proven to heal joints and tendons. I knew it would be ideal for my aches and pains. After just one use, I was amazed at how well this alternative herbal medicine worked. I would think such a topical cream would make a fortune. These days I apply Arnica cream to my forearms each night before bed, and when I wake up each morning, they’re restored. It’s phenomenal stuff.

Control Blood Sugar and Blood Pressure without Prescription Drugs

For controlling blood pressure, you should first take care of your nutrition. Avoiding meat and dairy products will help. In doing so, you can reduce your cholesterol too. Eat an abundance of fruits, especially those kinds that do not aggravate your blood sugar levels in case you are a diabetic as well. The best thing that can really work for lowering your blood pressure is drinking a lot of plain water while avoiding consuming soft drinks, particularly those that are processed drinks and those that contain sugar. It is better to avoid coffee as well. The best advantage with water is that it does not produce any side effects at all.

The next thing you can do is to minimize your intake of common salt or sodium.  Better yet, just avoid salt altogether in your food. Table salt is processed sodium chloride and is found in high quantities in processed and pre-packaged foods.  If you start with with only fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and whole grains, you won’t have a problem lowering your sodium intake.  If you cannot avoid salt intake altogether in cooking, you can perhaps use sea salt or “Celtic salt”, whose molecules are quite complex, and so it is not harmful like table salt is.  It is also difficult to find low-salt foods at restaurants due to the high volume of prepared and frozen foods they buy before they even begin making your dish in the restaurant.

Acupuncture for Headaches


Headache sufferers face a potentially debilitating problem if they do not find some way to treat their headaches. They impact on every part of their lives. In the last thirty years the use of acupuncture for headache care has been studied worldwide. The conclusions have shown the success of this treatment. Studies conducted over the last seven years prove continuously that there is improvement for the person who uses acupuncture as a headache treatment. They even show improvement for those suffering with cluster headaches, reported to be the worst, most painful of all headaches.

Statistics show that acupuncture does not necessarily stop headaches completely but it definitely reduces the average per month and the overall degree of headache pain. One study group found that after a three month course of acupuncture treatments the headache frequency went from having headaches nearly nine days out of a month to less than five. Those with migraines went from an average of seven headache days to only four monthly. Tension headaches were reduced from ten times monthly to half that. These positive results continued for ninety days after treatments stopped. During the treatment period only fifty percent of the patients required medication during their headaches. The control group required it among seventy percent of their people.

Another group in a recent study was given scalp acupuncture to deal with their headache pain. Headaches do not necessarily require pain relief that is only through the needles being put in the scalp. Depending on the cause of the headaches needles may be inserted on the arms and legs as well. Of those who used scalp acupuncture ninety eight percent not only had significant relief, no headaches or greatly diminished ones, but this relief lasted over six months after the treatments ended.

This continuing evidence of acupuncture success with headache pain should be a message to all headache sufferers who are tired of the intense pain, the disruption to their days and want to try a treatment that will be safe.

Acupuncture is Highly Successful for Stopping Smoking


What do you do if you want to quit smoking but no matter what you have done you are not successful? Many people feel that the best way to quit is to slowly reduce the number of cigarettes smoked. But really this almost never works. Others believe that the way to do it is to go cold turkey, just finish that package of cigarettes sitting on your desk and do not buy any more. Most times that can work. Still others use the patch, but even that is not one hundred percent full proof. With so many people trying to quit smoking a method that is gaining acceptance is the use of acupuncture to help a person quit.

Acupuncture is the method by which a trained specialist inserts very thin needles in specific places to have very specific outcomes. The practice of using acupuncture to help with addictions goes back to the 1970s. The important part of this program is that those who come for treatment must truly want to give up smoking. They will not be successful if they are attending sessions to please a partner, parent or employer. Quitting smoking must be a strong desire not simply a passing whim.

It is more difficult to cure those who began smoking young. It is a known fact that eighty percent of Americans begin to smoke before they see their eighteenth birthday. Nonetheless with acupuncture the success rate is high. One study reported results that said that after the first week of daily treatments sixty percent of those who choose to stop smoking did. A further twenty five percent of those who remained also stopped. Follow-up a year later claimed that ninety percent of those who quit smoking with the help of acupuncture did not start smoking again. This is a good outcome.

The treatment is commonly done on points of the ear. The needles are gently inserted and then left in between fifteen and twenty minutes. As well, there are some body points that can be used but they are more often used when dealing with a person who wants to cut down slowly. The treatments seem to become effective quickly with it often taking only a few days before the taste of the cigarette becomes unpleasant to the person who at one time was a heavy smoker. Ear acupuncture is so beneficial that only ten percent of people do not respond favorably to this treatment.

In one study of three hundred smokers, two hundred and seventy quit smoking. Of them thirty complained that the cigarettes tasted awful, thirty others complained of nausea when smoking and another group of thirty said it made them feel hot. Of the two hundred and seventy treated by acupuncture only twenty five percent started smoking again.

Acupuncture is a non-intrusive inexpensive method of quitting smoking with a high success rate. Given that and the difficulty that so many people have even when they want to stop smoking it seems that it is an option worth trying.

Arthritis Successfully Treated With Acupuncture


With nearly twenty million Americans currently suffering from some type of arthritis many of them looking for alternates for pain relief to the daily medications they must ingest. One reason is that some of these medications can have serious side effects. Many of these people are looking for any pain relief alternatives that are both safe, and preferably, more natural.

Acupuncture therapists claim that they can help relieve pain in those who are suffering from arthritis. A study conducted a few years ago on treating arthritis in the knee proved without a doubt that using acupuncture on arthritis pain will not only reduce the pain but it will also improve function of that joint. After years of ridicule from practitioners of western medicine who were not able to understand this very old Chinese alternative medicine it has not only gained acceptance in the public eye, it has gained scientific acceptance. The public understands that it can relieve their pain which is why acupuncture use is widespread in the United States. But, the conclusion of this latest study shows that health care providers must open up more to the possibility of suggesting this therapy for their patients.

The recent study was conducted using nearly six hundred patients, all over fifty, who suffered from chronic knee pain due to arthritis. They were divided into three groups, each receiving a different treatment. The first group was treated with a normal acupuncture treatment plan. The second group was given fake acupuncture to determine how the idea of getting this treatment would affect them and the last were the control group. The control group used no medication but instead was instructed in how to make their chronic knee pain better by themselves through the use of cold packs, heating pads or exercises. The treatments began twice weekly for the first two months. Over the next eighteen weeks patients only required one weekly treatment. No one reported any side effects that were caused by the treatments.

The results were that forty four percent of the patients found a significant amount of pain diminishment. Forty percent of the patients had an increase in motion and flexibility of the knee by the time they reached the fourteenth week of treatment. The researchers came out and said that they were satisfied that the results of their study had proven that using acupuncture as a pain relief tool was effective. Further they promoted the idea that using this kind of treatment while following standard treatments from your health care provider was a good way of caring for those with chronic arthritis. They were not prepared to suggest it as the sole management of pain from arthritis but as a complimentary treatment they felt it was a more than adequate choice.

Acupuncture is really worth trying when you think about the possibility of it improving your chronic pain from arthritis. It could mean the difference between taking medication and not having to anymore because you have found a safe and natural approach instead.
