Discover your spirituality with yoga

Yoga has many beneficial effects if you practice it on a regular basis; it is known to help if major illnesses as well as being undertaken by those who just want to get fitter and healthier. There is so much more to yoga however, yoga is a total holistic system that can strengthen not only the muscles but also the mind. Those who practice yoga on a more serious level think of it as a totally spiritual experience and benefit on a spiritual level deeply.

The majority of people who practice yoga do so because of the way that their whole system, their body, mind and soul is brought together and the totally peaceful feeling that this brings out in the person. Yoga helps to bring and harmonize the body, mind and spirit that are essential to a happy lifestyle.

The Chinese have long believed that illness develops due to the body becoming out of sync and that symptoms are just a sign of a more deeper underlying problem. They believe that there is an energy force that flows throughout the body and it is when this energy force is blocked that problems begin to arise within the body. Yoga is one way of ensuring that the flow of energy is kept running freely throughout the body, yoga can help to achieve this many ways, the poses are specifically designed to open up the chest, the heart, the lungs and to strengthen the body functions such as the immune system.

One of the aspects of yoga is to help the person develop their spirituality and to let it flow, to look into themselves and the person they are instead of running away and putting the blame on anything else but themselves. Those who develop their spirituality have found that they are able to feel free, happy and are able to deal with and overcome problems that previously would have had them in knots.

Feeling good about oneself is essential in dealing with a wide variety of problems and indeed if you are able to deal and understand yourself and the problems that affect you then very often these problems simply disappear. One oft eh easiest ways to start looking into yourself and finding your spiritual side is to start off with the yogic breathing exercises. Yogic breathing helps the person to settle down and relax and to look inside him or herself and discover the person they really are.

Hatha yoga breathing relies on focusing on the exhalation; Westerners seem to put importance on inhalation when in fact this is wrong. Changing the way we breathe can vastly change how we feel as well as our outlook on life. When practicing Hatha yoga to develop your spirituality breathe in slowly though the nose fully, yogic breathing focuses strongly on silent breathing, if you are breathing correctly then you shouldn’t be able to hear yourself breathe. When exhaling, be sure that you do so from your abdomen and make sure that you push the air out of your body totally. This is the simplest way to perform yogic breathing to develop and bring forth your spirituality.

It is said that every one in ten people suffer from some sort of back problem at some time or another; it is one of the most common types of problem that sends us to the doctor and the hospital. Back pain can vary from person to person in the area the pain is felt in and there are many different types of back pain and problems with the back. However, there is one form of medicine that is great for those who suffer from back pain and which many can find a great deal of relief in where other forms of medicine have failed. Traditional Chinese medicine has been used for centuries to help deal with many problems and one of the problems it is known to have great success with is problems relating to the back.

In Traditional Chinese medicine the Chinese associate the majority of back problems with problems of the kidneys and as such many of the therapies and cures for back pain are aimed at that area. One of the most widely used forms of Chinese medicine for back problems is acupuncture.

Acupuncture therapy

Acupuncture relies on small thin stainless steel needles being inserted into various points on the body in order to remove blockages of the energy that flows around the body. “Chi” and which is very often trapped near the kidneys that is said to be the cause of some type of back pain and back related disorders.

Depending on how long the blockage has been in place will depend on the amount of acupuncture therapy needed to remove the blockage and to eliminate the associated pain. Research and studies have shown that acupuncture has been very successful in treating various types of back pain and related disorders of the back.

Moxabustion

Moxabustion is another form of medicine which is widely regarded as helping people overcome back problems they have had for sometimes many years and people have turned to this as a last resort. This involves concentrated herbs being burnt or sprayed over the skin to warm up the channels containing the blocked energy.

Chinese massage

Chinese massage is a time old traditional form of medicine that is used to successfully alleviate the pain felt with back problems. Here a qualified therapist will use the hands to work on the meridian channels to encourage the chi to start flowing freely throughout the body. It is important that you choose a trained and qualified practitioner of Chinese massage to perform this technique especially if there is inflammation present in the area.

Herbal back remedies

Herbal medicine is sometimes prescribed either on its own or is suggested to compliment acupuncture. When back pain is the problem certain herbs are combined together which will help to strengthen the kidneys and to encourage the channels to open up and widen to allow the flow of energy so that blockages are non-existent. Again there is no ready made recipe to cure back pain; you should visit a qualified Chinese herbalist to have the remedy made up for you, depending on where the back pain is will depend on the combination of herbs needed.

While there is much help to be gained from your doctor and many medications available to help calm the symptoms associated with the illness, there are other totally natural alternatives to ease the suffering of irritable bowel syndrome. Here are some of the proven natural remedies that can help to ease the symptoms.

Peppermint oil is one of the most widely used natural remedies for irritable bowel syndrome, it is said that peppermint oil can help to reduce the bloated feeling and abdominal pain of the illness. It is thought that the peppermint oil blocks the movement of calcium into the muscle cells of the intestines and therefore eases muscle contraction.

In eight of ten people that were given peppermint oil found it to be very effective, peppermint oil should only be taken in capsule form to avoid it causing havoc with the esophagus and causing heartburn. Peppermint oil can however have some side effects when taken in large doses and these include loss of appetite and problems with the nervous system such as anxiety attacks.

Another firm favorite as a natural remedy for irritable bowel syndrome is probiotics, these are living organisms that everybody has in the digestive system and are very often referred to as “friendly bacteria”. It is thought that by introducing probiotics to the body they help to keep the harmful bacteria at bay, make an improvement to the immune system and strengthen the protective barrier of the digestive tract. Guar Gum is another natural ingredient that is thought to help with the symptoms; it can help with lessening the symptoms of diarrhea and calming the abdominal pain. In clinical trials recently undertaken guar gum taken along with wheat bran did show excellent results.

It is also worth mentioning that food intolerances are thought to play an important role in those who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome. It is thought that in those who suffer from the illness have problems with the immune system triggering responses that lead to an imbalance in the intestinal bacteria. The foods that are thought to affect people who suffer form irritable bowel syndrome seem to be dairy products and grains. Therefore supervision and elimination of certain foods in the diet can go a long way to easing the problems associated with irritable bowel syndrome.

Water is also thought to help in those who suffer the illness, drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps to cleanse the whole body system.

Control Blood Sugar and Blood Pressure without Prescription Drugs

High blood pressure is a condition that has the potential to be quite a health risk.  Therefore, it is essential for anyone suffering from high blood pressure to follow the advice a health care professional or a qualified naturopath before relying entirely on remedies other than prescription drugs. Similarly, for controlling blood sugar, while you may try alternative remedies, you should always take your doctor’s advice about reducing the intake of (or stopping) prescription drugs.

Silymarin for blood sugar

Antioxidants are known to be beneficial in controlling blood sugar. Silymarin, (silybum marianum) a herbal extract taken from the seeds of Milk Thistle, has wonderful antioxidant properties that work in this manner. By taking Silymarin, you can reduce your blood sugar levels quite significantly.  Silymarin contains the active ingredients called flavolignans, which help the liver from poisoning. They also are believed to help in controlling Type 2 Diabetes, although the exact mechanism as to how they do it is still not clear.

Mulberry leaf

Morus, or mulberry leaf is chock full of Vitamin A and the B family of vitamins. It also contains pectin, adenine and choline. Chinese make and consume ‘sugar control herbal tea’ made from morus, green tea and jasmine in order to control blood sugar levels.

Vaccinium berries

Herbs that include huckleberries, blueberries and bilberries belong to the genus Vaccinium. Bilberries are rich in antioxidants and are said to control blood sugar levels. Both the leaves and the fruit of the bilberry herb have long been in use for the treatment of diabetes. However, as the leaves do impair the normal working of the liver when used for a long time, it is better not to use the bilberry leaves at all. But the berries of the bilberry herb are very useful, even if they may not actually lower the blood sugar levels. They are good in protecting the blood vessels from the damaging effects of diabetes and other diseases.

Neem leaves

Extracts from neem leaves and bitter gourd, it is believed, help in controlling blood sugar levels, provided they are consumed on a long term and regular basis.

For controlling blood pressure, you should first take care of your nutrition. Avoiding meat and dairy products will help. In doing so, you can reduce your cholesterol too. Eat an abundance of fruits, especially those kinds that do not aggravate your blood sugar levels in case you are a diabetic as well. The best thing that can really work for lowering your blood pressure is drinking a lot of plain water while avoiding consuming soft drinks, particularly those that are processed drinks and those that contain sugar. It is better to avoid coffee as well. The best advantage with water is that it does not produce any side effects at all.

The next thing you can do is to minimize your intake of common salt or sodium.  Better yet, just avoid salt altogether in your food. Table salt is processed sodium chloride and is found in high quantities in processed and pre-packaged foods.  If you start with with only fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and whole grains, you won’t have a problem lowering your sodium intake.  If you cannot avoid salt intake altogether in cooking, you can perhaps use sea salt or “Celtic salt”, whose molecules are quite complex, and so it is not harmful like table salt is.  It is also difficult to find low-salt foods at restaurants due to the high volume of prepared and frozen foods they buy before they even begin making your dish in the restaurant.

The Health Benefits of Aloe Vera

Ancient Egyptians knew the multiple health benefits of Aloe Vera. They used it in the treatment of infections, skin ailments and even constipation. Modern scientists have discovered many more health-giving properties of Aloe Vera. This can be used both internally and externally.

Aloe Vera is a succulent plant. Its stem is short, growing to a height of about 80 - 100 cms. Its leaves are thick and fleshy. They are lanceolate (long and pointed with a wide middle) with serrated margins (that is, with sharp triangular teeth resembling those of a saw). It can be grown as a potted plant in your garden, by its root sprouts. It multiplies by spreading its offsets. It likes warm tropical regions and so grows well in Barbados, Venezuela, Haiti, South Africa and certain warm regions like Texas in the US.

Properties of Aloe Vera

The juice of Aloe Vera contains vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, C, and choline, which is an organic compound and essential nutrient associated with vitamin B Complex. It also has several minerals like calcium, germanium, potassium, sodium, sulfur, chlorine, copper, iron and others. More importantly, Aloe Vera is rich in phytochemicals, which include several organic acids. Chrysophanic, salicylic succinic and uric acids are examples. A few polysaccharides such as acemannan, enzymes like glutathione peroxidase and many resins are also among the ingredients of Aloe Vera. It contains magnesium lactate, as well. Almost 96% of it, however, is water.

Topical uses

Aloe Vera is very good for the skin. It heals wounds of almost all types. By dilating capillaries and increasing blood circulation, it heals injuries to the skin. For burns, it can be applied on the affected part to give a soothing effect. It heals ulcers, bedsores, frostbites, abrasions, eczema, acne, ringworm and several other severe conditions affecting the skin. It works very well for sunburns. Because of its magnesium lactate content, it also works well as an itch-inhibitor.

Cancer fighting properties

As its gel contains acemannan, it is believed to stimulate the production of white blood cells that help fight disease. Scientists are therefore investigating Aloe Vera’s use in the treatment of leukemia, a disease resulting from a deficiency of white blood cells. Likewise, there is promise in Aloe Vera being effective in the treatment of certain cancers such as breast or ovarian cancers as it helps fight tumors. Acemannan along with another constituent of Aloe Vera, aloin, seem to work in this regard.

Other uses

It also works as an anti-inflammatory agent, and therefore, in the treatment of peptic ulcers, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis and so on. It is good for the digestive system, as it reduces constipation and heartburn. If taken internally, it works as a laxative. It has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal effects also.

The juice from its skin and gel can have beneficial effect for diabetics, by lowering their blood sugar levels. Triglycerides also are believed to show lower levels with the use of this juice.

Although Aloe Vera has many properties beneficial to human health, it is advisable to consult your health care professional before using it as an alternative herbal remedy for various ailments, particularly when you wish to take it internally.
